Smartphones with Android 5.0 Installed May Have Silent Mode Bug
Nexus users who have installed the Android 5.0 Lollipop may have discovered one little change, the disappearance of the silent mode. On smartphones with Android 4.4 KitKat, we would enable the vibration mode by turning down the volume completely. This puts the phone into the silent mode.
With Android 5.0, we could still enable the vibration mode by lowering down the volume to zero, but the silent seems to disappear completely. This could be a bug that Google needs to fix in the future. We should find out when Google will disseminate the necessary update.
There seems to be a workaround to put the Android 5.0 devices into silent mode. After lowering down the volume to zero, we could push the volume button up once to set the volume level to 1; then we need to reboot the device. When the device is booted completely, it should be in the volume mode. This is hardly a convenient workaround, because we need to reboot the phone every time we need to use the silent mode. Also, rebooting the phone would consume more battery juice, lowering the overall operational time of our device.
